The Light Shining Through
Update: This piece is SOLD and on its way to a private New York art collector!
This tarcoal portrait celebrates the strength and beauty of the women I met while traveling in Pakistan's remote #villages.
It was an intense process to skim the tarcoal to create such intricate ethnic jewellery designs, and to create the lighting effect on the background geometric screen.
While I was studying fashion and art in Karachi (Pakistan), I had the opportunity to visit villages and peoples of Sindh province. Cultures very different from what you would find in a metropolis, I was particularly inspired by the women dressed in traditional attire and adorned in local jewellery. They are beautiful.
When I returned to my art class, I made a tarcoal piece that celebrated this. Unfortunately, later, it was stolen, and all I had left of it was a photograph.
The Light Shining Through is my way of reclaiming this lost art by painting something similar in aesthetic and intricacy.
